Hyve Journeys: From New Business Manager to Head of Growth

Hyve Journeys: sharing real career stories from across Hyve. Next up: Remi Toyobo.

Welcome to Hyve Journeys - where we bring to life how people grow their careers at Hyve.

From supporting sales teams across the portfolio to leading growth for Breakbulk, Remi's 12-year journey reflects what can happen when you embrace new opportunities, stay curious and make an impact along the team. Remi was also recently selected to join Hyve's Future Leaders Programme, recognising his contribution to the business and supporting his continued growth as a leader.

In this edition of Hyve Journeys, he reflects on the role resilience, continuous learning and seizing opportunities have played in shaping his career.

Can you tell us about your journey at Hyve so far - how did it begin, and what's brought you to where you are today?

My journey began 12 years ago, in June 2014, when the company was known as i2i Events. I was part of the 'Commando Team', a team of hungry sales individuals who had no allegiances to any of the 30+ brands we had back then - shout out to Lucia Viscito and Gary Kakoullis, who were also part of the team.

Our goal was simple: help whichever event or team we were assigned to hit their sales target. Secretly hoping that the salespeople on those events left enough crumbs (data uncalled) so that we could make our mark, impress and maybe, just maybe, get a permanent role in that brand if a role became available.

Making an impact, not just on the events we supported but on the people around me, played a big part in getting me to where I am today.

What’s been your proudest achievement or most memorable moment at Hyve?

It’s tough to choose just one. However, I am most proud of two things: first, the accomplishments and growth of my immediate team, and second, seeing the long-term success of individuals I helped hire outside of the Breakbulk portfolio. It’s extremely rewarding to see them embrace the opportunities they are given and thrive.

What advice would you give someone looking to grow within the company?

The two key pieces of advice I would give are:

Stay curious and eager to learn. Consistently look up at those in higher positions and ask, ‘What do they know that I don't, how can I learn it?’ Absorb the knowledge that helps them excel in their roles.

And stay curious in evolving. Continually ask, ‘What does the best version of me look like?’ This requires you to challenge yourself. It doesn't mean you will be successful at every challenge, but one thing I can guarantee is you will learn something.

Looking back, what’s something you’ve learned about yourself through your career journey?

I’ve learned the true value of resilience. You never truly know what challenges the day ahead will bring, but what is most important is your ability to react thoughtfully and effectively.

How were you supported during your promotion/growth by Hyve?

The people within Hyve truly enabled my growth, offering support and guidance whenever I considered my next steps. I have been fortunate to have line managers who believed in me, even when the path presented challenges. I’ve always made sure to excel at my primary responsibilities and pushed to show my capability to support those above me, handle more, and want more.

The biggest support has been the chance to be given an opportunity. I think that is undervalued, the chance to impress or prove you are capable, and I’ve always made sure to grab those opportunities with both hands.

If you had to sum up your Hyve career journey in one word, what would it be — and why?

Rollercoaster.

While there have been ups and downs, it's only when you look back that you truly realise how far you’ve come.
